Valentine's Day

Why do people celebrate Valentine’s Day? What’s the catch? And did you know that Valentine’s Day originated as a Christian feast day to honor one or two early Christian martyrs (St. Valentine) and became a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love? (Source: “Valentine’s Day” from Wikipedia; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine%27s_Day#:~:text=It%20originated%20as%20a%20Christian,many%20regions%20of%20the%20world.)

The day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by an emperor named Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, this priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” addressed to the jailer’s daughter whom he befriened and healed from blindness. (Source: “Valentine’s Day” from Britannica)

Back then, Valentine’s Day wasn’t celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th century. This day is so popular in countries like USA, Britain, Canada and Australia and is also being celebrated in countries including Argentina, France, Mexico and South Korea.

Nowadays, people celebrate this occasion by giving gifts as well as roses and chocolates, going on dates and romantic dinners (Source: “The True History Of Valentine’s Day And Why We Celebrate It” by Micaela Bahn from The Pioneer Woman” ; https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/holidays-celebrations/a42348778/valentines-day-history/
